I always have bear spray ready to grab for quick self defense when hiking or backpacking. Yesterday a Sow crossed the trail we were on just 30 meters up from our location. After stopping and pointing the bear out to my wife, she looked and saw 2 cubs coming out of a natural den like structure to meet mama bear.
If we had started hiking 1 minute sooner, we may have been right between the mama bear and her cubs. The bear was up wind of us so I am not sure it even knew we were there but we left quickly and didn't have to use bear spray. When in Bear country be sure to talk or make noise so as not to surprise the bears. I think in the above instance, the bear probably had heard us earlier and was coming to check on the cubs.
